Many people think that as a REALTOR my only job is helping people buy and sell homes. That is not the case. There are a lot of REALTORS that are involved in advocacy. We spend a lot of time working with elected officials and other groups to protect you private property rights.

On March 5th over 40 Chattanooga REALTORS and almost 300 Tennessee REALTORS attending the annual Tennessee Realtor Day On The Hill in Nashville. Every year a group of concerned and involved REALTORS take a day away from their normal business and meet face to face with our Hamilton County elected officials to discuss upcoming bills. This year our main focus was on maintaining affordable housing and protecting landlord rights.

The group started in the Capital hearing from Governor Bill Lee, the Lt. Governor,  and the house Majority Leader. They then had appointments over the next several hours in the offices of the officials from the prospective districts.

These issues not only impact us as REALTORS, but also many of our clients. For example, affordable housing is crucial in areas experiencing increased growth such as ours and must continue to be a priority so that more people can attain the American dream  of homeownership.

REALTORS are the leading advocates

REALTORS are the leading advocates for homeownership and commercial real estate, which is why it is so critical that we connect with lawmakers and ensure they understand the issues facing the real estate industry and their constituents – of which many are home and property owners. Supporting home and property owners through smart legislation and regulatory initiatives is essential to advancing our nation’s economy, as well as our communities, so REALTORS are continuing to engage lawmakers on the issues that impact real estate.

This year three of the forty Chattanooga area REALTORS that attended were from Signal Mountain. Our attendance numbers have steadily grown each year but we would love to see more local REALTORS get involved with advocacy and join us next year.

This REALTOR Day On The Hill visit to Nashville is followed up with a visit to Washington DC in May where over 20,000 REALTORS have the National Day On The Hill where we meet with our federally elected officials on National issues like flood insurance, tax reform, affordable housing and keeping the mortgage interest deduction.

We’re always fighting for property owners and for private property rights. That’s who we R®
